Indies on the Offensive

So, tell me what you think about this statement, 'Gavin McInnes, one of the founders of Vice, who recently left the magazine, is considered to be one of hipsterdom's primary architects'?

Yeah, what the hell. I actually read that whole article.  Guess I'm chubby.  So, are we criticising hipsters in today's interview?
That's somewhat how I remember its birth.  I remember we were all living in this group house.  It was pretty exclusive.  I guess you could call it Indie, if you wanna give it a label. [gives a look I can't decipher.  don't know if being ironic or actually giving a condescending death-stare] By exclusive, I don't mean racist or sexist or anti-GLBTQ or anything, it's just...you wouldn't get it.  Anyway, then these guys, don't wanna name any names.  Bloody shit-head commercial people (that's the downfall of today's youth) came and made these bloody commercial extensions on the house, crappy job.  And then there were all these hipsters about.  Like, it was no surprise to me.  Like, if this had been TV, it would  have been just as surprising as at the end of a home-renovation show when the family gets back from their weekend away.

So, you're saying you read that long article?

Bloody hell yeah.  I see their point.  That guy was saying something about hipsters not creating stuff...well, as you can see on this Tumblr site I found, there's this phrase, "Hipsters buy art, Indies create art."  And I'd like to say three things in response to your question and in relation to this quote:
a)  If you're creative, this creativity is innate, and it's gonna come out no matter what.  Why the hell do you think oppressed people still make art?  Like, some countries actually don't let you express yourself.  For real.  But there are hard-core artists.  And the same thing is true even of countries like this one today.  Why do you think it's been so hard for me as an artist?  Because people want you to fucking conform!
b) Conformism is part of human nature.  That's a truth my High School English Teacher revealed to me.  So you can't hate the hipsters.  Just as creative people will create no matter what, the hipster is just a mainstream conformist and will conform no matter what.
c) I'd like to thank the hipsters for supporting my art.

That was deep.  Now, what can you say you feel about the last paragraph of the article?  Would you say you find its depth to be moving?

I'm not sure I can say that.  I'm just not sure about the whole Western civilisation thing.  I guess that in the end, we're all gonna die...

Nearly the holidays.......

So guess who posted?  Teenage Construct.  So, even though I'm feeling pretty uncreative, I'm posting.

So anyway, what's new?  Well, I think I'm sick of the whole not knowing what I'm gonna be when I grow up.  

So next time someone asks, I'll be telling them I wanna be a comedian.  

And then come across as a really boring person.  Which would be, like, a totally unmainstream way to make a joke.

And that's what I love about Indie stuff.  There's, like, no limits or anything, man.  You know what I mean?

But that was all a joke.  What I really will be is a CELEBRITY.  Like this:

Kabam.  Dude.  I am so making a reference to something from the eighties that made pop culture references.  

And that leads me to mention ROOKIEMAG because that has to do with pop culture references.

So anyway, today, for the first time ever, I talked about Rookiemag and Tavi Gevinson with people at my school.  

So we were like, this is like the Rookiemag Road Trip but not.

Don't you just love Clueless?  Seeing as people are calling me preppy, I reckon I should Cher-up a bit.  Like, start chewing chewing-gum.

OMG.  I'm wearing this Ralph Lauren cable jumper.  And I'm almost pretty sure that this guy from One Direction was wearing a cream/white version in a music video.

You know what?  The other day I saw some youngsters and I had one of those long moments where you have one of those deep "life is changing and I so was like unaware" feelings.  And then you go silent and then you can only say one thing in repetition for the next few minutes.  Because I realised youngsters these days dress hipster.  And just then as I was writing this post I realised that they dress like the celebrities called One Direction.  Dude, this is a change for the better.  Gone are the days of the short shorts, supre singlets and pulled up socks.

The World Today and Grundies

The post that has cracked me up the most on The Teenage Construct yet is the most recent on the back-to-school experience. You could call it the story of my life. It's not about school life exclusively, because if being preppy and nothing-less-than-perfect is the essence your "school culture"and "social world" then it also drives your whole life. Considering how many hours of your life are devoted to affairs and thoughts of school...it's a big deal.

The word to sum up the vibe I'm being sent from my new school is quite the opposite - GRUNGE. 

So funny, on the first day of school I overheard THREE separate conversations about how this school  is "supposed to be 'Indie'" and how "apparently Indie people go here". And I swear someone said that they weren't finding it Indie. And these were people who don't fit the Independent Norm. And then they all went on about how Indie is now Mainstream and abusing the concept of "Indie".

Which brings me to this discussion I saw a few weeks ago on the World of Warcraft Forum titled "Hipsters". And there were pages and pages i.e. hundreds and hundreds, of people going on debating like this:

"Is Hipster here to stay, because I just wish hipsters would all die"

"Nah, I reckon there have always been hipsters"

"I can't believe people would label ... (e.g. type of sunglasses, shoes, jeans, books) as hipster"

"I always wore...and now that there are hipsters, I'm classified as one and people hate me for it."

"It sounds like you're a hipster because you're pretending you aren't..."

"Hipster is stupid. It doesn't even make sense."

"Hipsters are so stupid, they don't know....."

"I hope hipster goes away soon. I hate them. I wish they would ***** die"

AND I AM DEVASTATED THAT I CAN'T FIND THE PAGE ANYMORE!!!! Whatever. Fill in the blanks - you know how it goes.

For the past couple of days, I've been walking around and trying not to crack up. In Year Seven, my colour group, whom I spent most classes with, went through a phase of obsession with BONDS grundies. I SWEAR some of us (not me) presented a song to the rest of us for a group task in Music. Today I looked them up on the Internet and they weren't exactly the same sort of daggy underwear everyone told me they were. (These ones I saw had all these in-your-face kind of Australia flag designs...)

Yeah. And now to state the obvious - that I haven't been blogging in AGES. And also, I need to state that by saying this at the end of the post, I was trying to not be an ordinary person who states the obvious at the beginning of the post. If, like, you didn't get it.

Hipster Houses

There’s something in the air that must be influencing you to ask yourself big questions about the nature of things, such as what happens to an Indie Child when they get kind of old and have already been living as an adult for a while? Well, I’ve been thinking about it a bit and researching the topic a bit and I’ve concluded that the natural path is becoming a Hipster and building a house. Built on big land, their children can be cultivated in the best possible way. It is then appropriate for them to start cooking hearty, rustic meals. (Living near the water is also very desirable.) You will doubtlessly have seen many pictures of these planned homes in magazines and online at places such as Unhappy Hipsters. There is therefore no need for me to describe them.

I’m not trying to rain down on their creative sparks or anything like that, but I can’t help noticing that seeing as Hipsters seriously dig the Nordic style, isn’t their style quite “off the shelf”? Hipsters probably love things to be crafted for them by craftspeople/furniture makers. So my question is whether it is they themselves who design their chair to an interesting geometric shape, or do they buy pieces from designers who specialise in interesting shaped furniture?

And you have noticed their passion for storage space, have you not? Utilising nifty storage space is an example of Hipster minimalist values, as they’re keeping the clutter out of their lives. Though they are not actually having few possessions.

Hipster homes are a living art-space. Creative people live in them and do creative things. Hipster furniture tends to be large and minimalist. So balancing big and small is important and composition is an art form. An example is leaving storage shelves of the open variety empty, with the exception of a small object. And having a tastefully artistic home breeds further creativity in all ways.

When I set out to write this blog post, I thought I knew what I was going to write about, that I had a clear point, actually, perhaps just a point. Now I’m just plain confused and feel that all I have grasped is that if you are in the situation of thinking for some reason that you fit into the Hipster category but aren’t confident letting your own innovativeness create your home, you can read the catalogues and visit the store of Swedish furniture company IKEA (which I’m thinking you probably already like.) In the scheme of things, it’s probably best to let others judge you and your taste by the brands you buy. DIY meets design. Hahahaha.
